Healthy Home, Healthy Head, pathway to employment

Last week was a hive of activity at the TRN Gateshead Construction Skills Academy with the launch of our brand-new innovative “Healthy Home, Healthy Head” pathway to employment course.

In partnership with Talent Match, the five-day course was designed to help individuals of any age get involved in activities devised to motivate in preparation to gaining employment.

In the North East, Talent Match is a partnership of young people, employers, the third sector and public sector agencies dedicated to providing long-term unemployed young people with the tailored support they need to overcome barriers into work. The programme was co-designed with young people and continues to have young people at the heart of decision making throughout its development.

One of the primary aims of the course is to empower an individual by teaching them a set of practical DIY skills in the hope that these skills would be used around the home, leading to a boost in confidence and a healthier mindset, setting the pace for the next steps to employment or training linked to a job outcome.

The skills gained on the course will last for life and we hope they will lead to a brighter outlook on our learners’ futures.

The Healthy Home, Healthy Head Course Includes:

  • Basic plumbing, replacing washers on dripping taps
  • Brickwork, repairing a garden wall
  • Concreting, mixing, laying and applying finishes to concrete
  • Diet & Nutrition
  • Drugs & Alcohol Awareness

Richard Whiteley (TRN Partnership Manager) said “the feedback from the lads has been really positive. I can safely say that they have all been taught some new skills which have improved their confidence, helping them move forward in the future”

Due to the positive feedback that we have received, we will certainly be looking to run this course again in the near future.
