TRN Summer Camp

The Very First TRN Summer Camp

It might have been the start of the summer holidays but that didn’t stop these young people from Kingsmeadow Community Comprehensive School carry on learning by attending the very first TRN Summer Camp.

Working in partnership with Gateshead Council the Summer Camp took place at TRN’s Construction Skills Academy, providing first-hand experience in a range of construction tasks, including painting and decorating, bricklaying, plastering, plumbing and electrical work to name a few.

Gateshead Council has been successful in taking part in a national pilot programme funded by the Department for Education to deliver a range of holiday activities that supports children in our neighbourhoods, offering various opportunities for young people to take part in activities. These activities will be taking place in various locations across Gateshead. The scheme will provide up to 30 young men and women (Aged 13 – 15) with a 4-day experience learning construction skills.

The aim of this scheme is to provide a unique summer holiday opportunity for a selected group to work in a construction training environment. This project is a pilot activity testing new ways of working to provide young people with meaningful experiences that can shape opinions, build confidence and support future career aspirations.

The young people were trained how to safely operate tools and were fully briefed and equipped in all aspects of safety by trained instructors. They were also given PPE including safety boots, safety gloves and safety glasses before getting started with the activities.

The young people covered a wide range of new skills including:

  • Brickwork, repairing a garden wall
  • Concreting, mixing, laying and applying finishes to concrete
  • Laying block paving and flag stones
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Plastering, small easy-fill patch work
  • Replacing smashed/cracked wall tiles

Eddie one of the learning tutors said “It’s great to see the young kids coming and giving up their free time to learn some new skills, they’ve been a pleasure to teach”

After speaking with the young people it’s clear to see they have all learnt so much and really enjoyed their time on TRN’s Summer Camp Course.
