An intermediate apprenticeship in Building Maintenance, Multi-trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations (Construction)

This qualification is for individuals working as maintenance operatives in domestic and commercial premises, to given specifications, repairing or renewing wood products, masonry, roofing, wall and floor tiling, decorating, bricklaying and plastering, depending upon the units taken in the qualification.

It covers a range of skills including carpentry and joinery; painting and decorating; wall and floor tiling; plastering; roofing or trowel occupations such as bricklaying or stonemasonry, allowing individuals to work as multi skilled operatives upon completion of the qualification.

If an employee already works in construction or are just starting their career as an apprentice, this is an opportunity to demonstrate their competence.

  • You must meet a minimum level of English and Maths skills in order to undertake this course.

To be eligible – you must:

  • Be aged 16 years or older
  • Have been resident in the UK/EU for at least three years prior to commencing your apprenticeship
  • Be employed in England and have a Contract of Employment
  • Work for at least 30 hours per week
  • Not currently enrolled onto any other apprenticeship, or another DfE funded FE/HE programme
  • Meet a minimum level of English and Maths skills in order to undertake this course

Training is arranged to suit you:

The minimum Guided Learning Hours (GLH) for the intermediate apprenticeship in Building Maintenance, Multi-trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations (Construction) is 1004 hours.

Training takes on average 18 months to complete, however this can be shorter dependent upon whether you have any recognition of prior learning (RPL) or unit/credit exemptions. We will discuss this with you at enrolment.

Course structure

The course is made up of the following four components:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Building Maintenance, Multi-trade Repair and Refurbishment Operations (Construction)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance Operations (Construction)
  • Functional Skills English and Maths (Level 1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights (ERR)

Mandatory Units

  • Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
  • Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
  • Deliver reliable customer service

Optional Units Group A (Must choose 1)

  • Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace
  • Establishing work area protection and safety in the workplace
  • Clearing the site and handing over on completion in the workplace

Choose two of the following optional groups:

Optional Group B - Maintenance Carpentry and Joinery (Must choose 2)

  • Maintaining non-structural carpentry work in the workplace
  • Maintaining non-structural or structural components in the workplace
  • Repairing, replacing and renewing gates, posts and fencing in the workplace

Optional Group C - Maintenance Painting and Decorating (Must choose 2)

  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller in the workplace
  • Hanging standard paper wallcoverings in the workplace
  • Preparing background surfaces for plastering, tiling, panelling or painting/decorating in the workplace

Optional Group D - Maintenance Tiling (Must choose 2)

  • Tiling wall and floor surfaces in the workplace
  • Preparing background surfaces for plastering, tiling, panelling or painting/decorating in the workplace
  • Removing and renewing floor screeds in the workplace

Optional Group E - Maintenance Plastering (Must choose 2)

  • Preparing background surfaces for plastering, tiling, panelling or painting/decorating in the workplace
  • Applying finishing plaster to prepared surfaces in the workplace

Optional Group F - Maintenance Roofing (Must choose 2)

  • Maintaining slate and tile roofing in the workplace
  • Removing and repairing eaves and verge finishings in the workplace
  • Repairing membrane roofing systems in the workplace
  • Repairing sheeting and cladding systems on roofs and walls, including rainscreen, in the workplace

Optional Group G - Maintenance Trowel Operations (Must choose 1)

  • Repairing and maintaining masonry structures in the workplace
  • Repairing basic stonemasonry structures in the workplace

Level 2 Diploma in Maintenance Operations (Construction)

  • Seven mandatory units.

Functional Skills (Level 1)

  • Everyday English and Maths to bring skills up to date. This consists of teaching, three tests and two practical assignments.

Functional Skills English and Maths (Level 2)

  • Must be attempted before completion of the apprenticeship although this does not have to be achieved to complete the apprenticeship.

Employment Responsibilities and Rights

  • Nine standards of attainment relating to employment.
